How Good Are Capybaras at Swimming?

Table of Contents

Capybara, also commonly known as the capy, is a small South American mammal that belongs to the family of rodents. Capybaras are found in forests and grasslands across Central and South America. They live in underground burrows, swamps, ponds and rivers. They spend most of their time eating fruit, leaves and roots.
Capybaras can swim well, but they usually stay near the shore. Their paddles are very large, giving them excellent maneuverability on land or in water, even when they weigh as much as 50 pounds (22kg). They have webbed feet to help them walk on wet rocks and lily pads. As aquatic mammals that spend most of their lives in water, it comes as no surprise that capybaras can swim well too.

Can Capybaras Breath Under Water

?
The answer is yes. Capybaras can breath air and water, and a capybara’s lungs are about one third the size of a human’s. They have a pair of nostrils on either side of their head that open individually to take in air. Their mouth is covered by a flap of skin, which they use to close when they want to sleep. One other way they can breathe underwater is by snorting through their nose, which creates bubbles in the water, helping them to stay afloat while taking in oxygen.

How Much Time Do Capybaras Spend Swimming

?
Capybaras spend about two hours a day swimming. They can swim for up to 20 minutes at a time, which is an average speed of 3.5 miles per hour (1.6km/h) on the surface and 1.5 miles per hour (0.8km/h) while submerged.
When they are swimming, they usually swim in a figure eight pattern with their head pointed downwards so they don’t get water in their eyes. However, if they want to rest, they will swim with their head pointing upwards as it takes less effort to keep it that way and helps them stay hydrated at the same time.

Can Capybaras Swim Fast

Capybaras have webbed feet to help them walk on wet rocks and lily pads. They can swim well, but they usually stay near the shore. Capybaras can swim fast, but they often swim slower than fish.
Their paddles are very large and give them excellent maneuverability on land or in water, even when they weigh as much as 50 pounds (22 kg).

How Often Do Capybaras Need To Swim?

A capybara has a natural need to swim, which is why they need to swim for about five minutes every day. It’s not uncommon for them to spend most of their day in water.
Capybaras are often found in the water, which means they need to swim regularly. They also like to play in the water and may try to catch fish or snakes. When they sleep, they roll over on their backs and float rather than submerge fully in the water.
Capybaras are excellent swimmers that spend most of their time near or in water. Their large feet help them stay afloat as well as allow them to maneuver easily on land and in water.
